A Legendary Texture That Beats Donut Shops! Yamazaki’s Supermarket “Nama Donut” Is So Good It Gave Me Chills
Hi to everyone across the country who hates foods that suck all the moisture out of your mouth — I’m Hide, tech journalist and part-time house-husband. Today, from a house-husband’s point of view, I’m introducing a sweet bun that made me go “I have to buy this!”
It’s good enough to impress me — someone who’s usually picky about sweet buns — and it’s cheap at around ¥140. A must for buying in bulk.
A ¥140 sweet bun with this quality — it honestly made me think “Wow”At 370 kcal, it’s about twice the calories of regular bread. Eat a lot and you’ll gain weight, but it’s GOOD for a quick energy boost before getting back to work
## There’s a formula for delicious bread
I think the most important thing for delicious bread is moisture. Baguettes and other hard breads are tasty too, but you don’t just munch them plain — you’re meant to dip them in something or put something on top, right?
And the fact that the inside is surprisingly moist and chewy
In other words, the formula is “the bread and everything else blend together in your mouth the moment you bite, hitting the perfect moisture level = delicious.” By that theory, this nama donut is in the top tier.
Way more evolved than Showa-era bread
Even convenience store bread has improved massively compared to the old days, right? I loved jam koppe (jam-filled rolls) and ate them a lot, but there was never quite enough jam and margarine… And the school lunch bread was hard, with the white part packed super tight. (wry smile)
It was tasty, though... I remember it sucking all the moisture out of my mouth and being really hard to eat
The first one that surprised me, as far as I can remember, was 7-Eleven’s “Soft Koppe with Strawberry Jam and Margarine.” Same size as the school lunch roll, but fluffy, with lots of strawberry jam and margarine! It’s probably been about ten years since it came out, but I’ll never forget that shock...
Honestly, it might be better than Mister Donut
One bite, and it hit me with the same shock as that legendary soft koppe — or bigger. That’s this “Nama Donut (Milk Whip).” The same series has a chocolate whip version too, but it wasn’t as good, so I recommend the milk whip.
Experience legendary deliciousness
The first amazing thing is how moist it is. The dough around the outside is fluffy yet moist. Moister than 7-Eleven’s soft koppe. It’s amazing that it’s moist even though the dough isn’t that dense and stays fluffy.
The fluffy whipped cream is top-notch too
And there’s plenty of whipped cream. Not too sweet, just the right amount, and no matter where you take your first bite, a “Sooo good!” thrill shoots straight to your brainstem.
I love Mister Donut’s Angel Cream and eat it a lot, but don’t some bites end up being just bread? And that bugs you because there’s not enough moisture. This nama donut has fresh cream kneaded into the dough too, so even the bread part alone is delicious.
Even the dough alone is delicious... the best
And Angel Cream is ¥165! The nama donut is ¥140! And you can buy it at your local supermarket! (It might be even cheaper at some supermarkets!) I can’t find a single reason not to buy it.
Yamazaki Baking... you’re the best!
So whenever I spot them, I buy every last one. Oh, and it’s generously dusted with powdered sugar, so be careful if you eat it in the car.
